This blog is about reading and writing and finding things inappropriately amusing. (I suffer from inappropriate laughter–it’s a real thing, don’t laugh. Or do. If you suffer from it, too. I won’t judge you. I’ll probably laugh at you, though.) The Z-word, which I’m not even going to write anymore because it’s taking over my site, is… well, it’s taking over my site. It all started because some stupid scientist who spells his name with a question mark did a study on surviving the Z-word apocalypse. Which I totally believe will happen and we’re probably all screwed anyway. We don’t need your research, Mr. Smith?.Read More →

Every day, I read blogs from writers, editors, and agents telling us (writers) not to complain on our personal sites. Don’t reveal too much about yourself, or your weaknesses, or your failures. Too many times, I’ve happened across a forum war or, worse, an Amazon review war between an author and readers or even other authors. What you write is cached somewhere–Google or the Wayback Machine–and you’ll never escape the day you told a little too much or complained a little too loudly or even acted like a total bitchface because someone dared to negatively review your work. This is why I admire Lani DianeRead More →
Are you a Twilight enthusiast? A Bella-Wannabe? Mooning endlessly over Bella’s identification withWuthering Heights and thinking the only thing as great as being the author of Edward would be being the author of Heathcliff? Just so you know: the author of Heathcliff was dissed by her publisher, left unpublished until he could ride the coattails of her sister Charlotte, then published in a terrible edition with sloppy typesetting and cheap paper, and ignored by the reading public, who found Heathcliff—beyond reprehensible—downright disgusting. Emily Bronte was a bonafide literary genius whose greatest work, a saga in verse, was altered after her death against her passionately-clear wishesRead More →
I love looking at what search terms led people to my site–mostly because it’s so messed up. For your consideration, I offer the following: “zombies will never happen,” “zombie love,” zombie love story,” and “scientific zombie study.” I tell you, I have become the queen of zombies. And I write contemporary romance–not paranormal. There are no freaking zombies in my manuscripts (not that there’s anything wrong with that). I also got “people flirt.” Well, yeah. They do. But what’s this got to do with me? Someone else searched “laurie sizemore aadom.” Which is not me. But, at first, I thought was cool, because I thought,Read More →
There’s this guy and he calls himself The Oatmeal. No, I don’t know why. But he’s hilarious. For instance, he explains how to use a semicolon and he’s correct. But, it’s also funny enough that you might just remember it. He also explains why he’d rather be punched in the testicles than call customer service. And 10 reasons to avoid talking on the phone. And he does it all, and there’s plenty more, with these hilarious cartoons. So, you should go there, love him, and buy a poster. And, no, I didn’t get a thing for saying this. I just love sharing the funny.Read More →
On changes in the romance genre: The relationships had also modernized: by the 1990s, it was rare to see a book which featured a man raping his future wife. via Romance novel – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Yeah, thank goodness those crazy men finally came to their senses. In the NINETIES. What the? I get that this still happens in books. Not books I read, but, it happens. I get that some people enjoy this… forced intimacy. But, damn it, who the hell marries someone who respects and loves them so little they just commit a crime against them? Who else do they fall inRead More →
