The Kernel Idea–Not Popocorn

I’m linking to this blog post from Bob Mayer because it explains the kernel idea perfectly and since this post is pretty much what made it click for me.

I thought, I can’t do this.  I’m just 2 weeks in the outlining, charactering, plotting phase, and still–it’s not going to happen.  But, as writers, we tend to be a little sentimental about our stories–we dig hard enough, we can remember the moment where we thought, “This will be an awesome story.”  And I found it.  I will update you on how much having this (kernel idea) helps me as I go through the process, but for  now– read the post (which is excellent).  Give it a try.

  1. Without the Kernel Idea, I’d be one lost writer. When I first heard Bob speak about this idea I thought my head was going to explode. Since then, while writing is still hard work, by applying the techniques Bob teaches my writing has improved a great deal.

  2. Thanks for the post. Yes, the core of the idea is the key. Something motivates us so much to sit alone and write 100,000 words, it must be important.

  3. This is great information. Folks, listen to this guy. He’s very bright and knows what he’s talking about. You can’t go wrong with following people who can walk the walk – like him. Great information, dude. Just the way I like it!
Spam Ridicule!: If you’re speaking of Bob mayer, then all you say is true. If you’re referring to me, the one who wrote this post, I am not a guy. I consider myself mostly bright but I rarely know what I’m talking about. It’s more of a guess. Thanks, anyway…dude.
